Is Paphos good for families? For most families, yes. The flight from the UK is short-haul, the beaches around Coral Bay in Cyprus are calm and shallow, and there’s a zoo, a waterpark and a harbour castle within reach. But it isn’t perfect, and the things that catch parents out are worth knowing before you book: the July and August heat, gaps in lifeguard cover, and the rules on child car seats. This is how it looks from Peyia.
Beaches and lifeguards
The beaches are the main reason families come. Coral Bay, the nearest big beach to Peyia, is a good example: the water is clean, calm and shallow, and there are toilets, showers, changing rooms, sunbeds and umbrellas, wheelchair access and a bus stop. Lifeguards are on duty there from April to October.
What the Blue Flag means, and doesn’t
In July 2026, 46 beaches and two marinas in Cyprus were flying a Blue Flag, 13 of the beaches in the Paphos district. In the Akamas Municipality, which takes in Peyia, those were Coral Bay, Laourou and Kafizis.
Two caveats. First, the flags aren’t fixed for the summer: in May 2026 Cyprus lost eight after pollution was found, so the list moves during the season. Second, a flag doesn’t guarantee a lifeguard at every hour.
Our guide to the best beaches near Coral Bay compares the nearby beaches in more detail.
The heat
This is the biggest downside for young children. The 1991–2020 averages at Paphos Airport put the daily high at 30.4 °C in July and 31.0 °C in August, with almost no rain. Older children who live in the pool won’t mind. Toddlers and babies need a routine built around shade, with outings early in the morning and late in the afternoon.
The shoulder months are easier. May averages 24.9 °C and October 27.0 °C, both warm enough for the beach and the pool, and the lifeguard season covers both.
| Month | Average high | Family verdict |
|---|---|---|
| April | 21.8 °C | Mild; the sea is still cool |
| May | 24.9 °C | Warm, and good for days out |
| June | 28.1 °C | Hot; good pool weather |
| July | 30.4 °C | Very hot; plan around midday |
| August | 31.0 °C | The hottest month |
| September | 29.4 °C | Still hot, but easing |
| October | 27.0 °C | Warm and gentler |
The Paphos weather guide has every month in detail.
How long is the flight?
The flight from Gatwick to Cyprus takes about 4 hours 30 minutes, which is manageable with children: one film and a meal. Our guide to flights to Paphos lists the UK airports with direct flights, and Paphos airport to Coral Bay covers taxis, buses and hire cars.
Car seats and driving with children
Cyprus drives on the left, like the UK, so hiring a car feels familiar. The rules on children in cars are strict, and they apply to visitors too.
Seat belts are compulsory in the front and the back, and children must use a child restraint suited to their weight. A rear-facing baby seat must not go in a seat with a frontal airbag unless the airbag has been switched off. In a taxi, children may use an adult belt in the back if the right restraint isn’t available.
The Cyprus Police have spelled out the heights: in 2022 they reminded parents that children up to 135 cm tall must be in a child car seat, and those from 135 cm to 150 cm in a booster seat. They also advise that children under 16 sit in the back.
If you hire a car, book seats with it, or hire them from us at €35 a week per seat and we’ll have them ready. A pram is available at €40 a week.
Healthcare, pharmacies and emergencies
For UK visitors, this is reassuring, with one firm warning.
- GHIC and EHIC: a UK GHIC or EHIC is valid in the Republic of Cyprus and gives access to medically necessary state healthcare. The FCDO and the NHS are both clear that it is not an alternative to travel insurance. It doesn’t cover private clinics, treatment ruled non-urgent or the cost of getting you home to the UK, so take out travel insurance for every family member.
- Emergencies: call 112 and ask for an ambulance. The line has English-speaking staff. Paphos General Hospital has an accident and emergency department, and its switchboard is +357 26 803 100.
- Pharmacies: from May to September, pharmacies open from 08:00 to 13:30 and 16:00 to 19:30 on weekdays, with Wednesdays and Saturdays morning only. From October to April the afternoon session runs from 15:00 to 18:30. For a night pharmacy in Paphos, call the recorded line on +357 90 901 416.
- Medicines: some medicines that are legal in the UK are controlled abroad, so check before packing anything unusual.
- Water: the drinking water is of high quality and safe.
Days out with children
There’s more to do than most families fit into a week.
- Pafos Zoo is in Peyia itself and opens every day from 09:00. Our guide to Paphos Zoo and the waterpark covers the hours, the bird show and the feeding encounters.
- Aphrodite Waterpark in Kato Paphos runs from April into November, with a children’s area for the youngest.
- Kato Paphos has the Roman mosaics of ancient Nea Pafos, Pafos Fort by the harbour and the Tombs of the Kings, all close together. See things to do in Paphos.
- Around Peyia, the beaches at Coral Bay and the sea caves are close to home. Our guide to Peyia with kids has a sample week.
Which ages suit Paphos best
Babies and toddlers. The short flight helps, and calm, shallow water like Coral Bay’s is ideal for paddling. The challenge is the heat: from June to September, plan on an early beach session, a long lunch and nap indoors, and a second outing after 16:00. Bring or hire a proper car seat for every journey, however short.
Primary-school children. This is the sweet spot. They can manage the zoo and the waterpark, see the sea caves from the cliff top, and stay up for dinner outside when the evenings cool. The October half-term, with average highs of 27.0 °C, is a good fit.
Teenagers. They’ll want the waterpark’s bigger slides, which have a 1.20 m height limit, plus water sports at Coral Bay and evenings in Kato Paphos. A villa with its own pool and games gives them space from the adults.
Multi-generation groups. Paphos works well when grandparents come too: an easy flight, plenty of shade at a villa, and days out that don’t demand long walks.
The honest downsides
- Heat in high summer, covered above. If your children are under five, May, June, September and October are kinder.
- Lifeguard gaps, especially in the early evening and when towers are short-staffed.
- You’ll want a car. Bus 615 links Coral Bay with Kato Paphos, but with car seats, beach bags and naps, most families find a hire car easier.
- Seasonal opening. The waterpark closes for the winter, and lifeguards are on duty only from April to October.
None of these are reasons not to come. They are reasons to choose your month carefully and plan the days around shade.
Where to stay
Villa Prasino is a private villa in Peyia for up to 6 guests, fully fenced with electric gates, and has a 6 × 12 m diving pool, a hot tub, air conditioning and 1,000 m² of gardens. Coral Bay beach is about 5 km away and the sea caves about 2 km. Under cover there’s a games area with a pool table, table tennis, table football and darts, for the hours when it’s too hot to be in the sun.

See how we set up the villa for holidays with children, check availability and rates, and send us a booking request when you have dates. Tell us your children’s ages and we’ll tell you how we can set the villa up for them.
